Low Voltage Switchgear
On a distribution system, low-voltage switchgear is usually located on the secondary or low-voltage side of transformer. The substation is a common term for this combination. For a wide range of commercial, industrial, and utility applications, it provides energy for critical, standby, backup power, and critical process applications.
Our low voltage switchgear solutions combine advanced technology, robust design, and user-friendly features to meet the demands of modern power systems. Our low voltage switchgear solutions deliver unmatched reliability, efficiency, and safety for all your power distribution needs.
The Essential Components of Low-Voltage Switchgear
A section of low-voltage switchgear typically consists of three distinct and segregated parts:
- Breaker compartment
Up to four power circuit breakers, stacked vertically, can typically be accommodated in each breaker compartment. Every power circuit breaker has its own compartment, separate from the others.
- The bus compartment
The bus compartment, which is separated from the circuit breaker compartment by solid barriers, is located behind the breaker compartment. An insulated barrier between adjacent bus compartments keeps them apart from one another..
- The cable compartment

At the back of the switchgear section is the cable compartment, which can be separated from the bus compartment by either vented or unvented barriers. Landing lugs for terminating line and load cables are accessible through hinged doors or detachable coverings in the cable compartment. Since access to the rear of the switchgear enclosure is necessary, this compartment arrangement—which is the most common—may also be referred to as rear-accessible switchgear.
CODES AND STANDARDS
Low-voltage switchgear is typically built to adhere to the standards set by the IEEE (North America), IEC (Europe and other parts of the world), UL, and ANSI (American National Standards Institute).
- ANSI/IEEE C37.20.1 – Standard for Metal-Enclosed Low-Voltage (1000 Vac and below, 3200 Vdc and below) Power Circuit Breaker Switchgear
- ANSI/IEEE C37.20.7 – Guide for Testing Metal-Enclosed Switchgear Rated Up to 38 kV for Internal Arcing Faults
- UL 1558 – Metal-Enclosed Low-Voltage Power Circuit Breaker Switchgear
- UL 1066 – Standard for Low-Voltage AC and DC Power Circuit Breakers Used in Enclosures
